Dr. Thompson is Chair Emeritus of the AMD Alliance International.

Dr. Bob Thompson studied Medicine at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London University. He is a Retired Chairman of the Macular Disease Society (UK) and Founding Chairman (1998-2001).

In 1992, Dr. Thompson experienced early symptoms of visual impairment and was diagnosed, at an unusually young age, with Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Rapid and profound central vision loss forced him to change the course of his career. He has become a well-known figure in the UK as a knowledgeable and media savvy expert on the condition of AMD and low vision rehabilitation. Although now retired as chairman of both organizations, he still plays an active role by writing, lecturing and broadcasting, as well as raising the profile of macular disease and other low vision conditions.
